Evidence rules constrain proof at criminal and civil trials. This course focuses on the Federal Rules of Evidence (and, in some semesters, the California Evidence Code), related case law, and those constitutional concepts that limit proof at criminal trials. The course covers all major evidentiary concepts, including relevance, presumptions and burden of proof, the role of judge and jurors, character evidence, hearsay and its exceptions, expert testimony, scientific proof, and privileges.
