Women of Stanford Law (WSL)

Overview

WSL sponsors and participates in activities designed to address the interests and concerns of a diverse population of women law students. In recent years, WSL has coordinated discussion groups and panels to address current issues involving gender and the law from a variety of perspectives.

The group's activities also include an introductory reception for students to meet and converse with women faculty and administration members, and a brown bag lunch series, another popular event where students and faculty share information in an informal setting.

WSL also coordinates a mentorship program that links incoming students with second- and third-year women who assist them as they acclimate to law school and throughout the rest of the year, especially during their search for summer employment. WSL also plans to organize panels of female attorneys to share their experiences as women in the legal world and their advice on how to succeed in it.

WSL works throughout the academic year to encourage more women to attend Stanford Law School. The activities of the organization's recruitment committee have included contacting admitted women to encourage them to attend Stanford and sponsoring Admit Day receptions.

WSL also takes an active interest in the community surrounding Stanford. In 2002-2003, WSL will begin an on-going project to publish pamphlets for local women describing their legal rights with regard to such issues as domestic abuse and sexual violence.
